Café Triest is the Viennese coffee house of the Austrian Hospice, 37 Via Dolorosa in the Muslim Quarter, serving apple strudel, Sachertorte and Viennese melange, open every day. The hospice stands at the corner of the Via Dolorosa and HaGai (Al-Wad) Street, at the Third Station of the Cross, and has been open since 1863. The café is named after the port of Trieste, from which the first Austrian pilgrimages set out. You ring the buzzer at a modest door and sit in the Kaiserstüberl room or in the garden. The menu also has schnitzel and local dishes, served by local staff and young volunteers from Austria. Open from 10:00; the kitchen serves until 21:00 and the café closes at 22:00, and it is open to non-guests too. The roof terrace, reached by lift to the second floor, looks out over the Old City, the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. Entry is ₪5, free for hospice guests.
