The Hamami brothers' shop used to sell only spices, but today you will also find a wide range of grandmother's remedies passed down through the generations. White tea, for instance — a remedy brought here by Persian Jews, said to calm and to cleanse the blood. They grind on the premises: poppy seed, sesame, flax, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, coffee, rice, quinoa and chickpeas, with no risk of gluten. The nuts are roasted with potato flour, also gluten-free, for those who are sensitive. What else is here? Yemenite gum made from tree resin, a remedy for "women's matters" said to strengthen the womb; special blends made here for fish, meat and rice; and chia, the seeds of a particular sage from the Mexico region, which are drunk.
