From Friday afternoon to Saturday nightfall, Jerusalem observes Shabbat and the whole city changes gear. Here's exactly what stays open, where to eat, how to get around — and the one experience you shouldn't miss.

This week Shabbat begins in Jerusalem at 16:11 on Friday and ends at 17:28 on Saturday. 112 places are open on Shabbat: 35 restaurants, 22 cafés, 19 bars and 36 attractions and museums, and 23 events run during Shabbat itself, with 14 more on Saturday night after Shabbat ends. What closes

Buses and the light rail stop from mid-afternoon Friday until after dark Saturday. Most shops and many West-Jerusalem restaurants close, and Machane Yehuda market winds down Friday afternoon. Plan a walking day and book food ahead.

Getting around

Walk — the centre and the Old City are compact and beautiful on foot. Taxis and the Gett app run throughout Shabbat, and most hotels can order one for you. Rent nothing that relies on the light rail on Saturday.

The light rail — when it stops and when it's back

It stops before candle lighting and returns after Havdalah. Here are the times, so you know when to set out and when you can head back.

Exact times are republished weekly and shift with candle lighting. On the most recent weekend recorded here, the last train left roughly an hour and a half to two hours before candle lighting, and the first returned about an hour after Havdalah.

What is open in Jerusalem on Shabbat?

The Old City sites (the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Ramparts Walk) stay open, several museums operate (the Israel Museum, the Biblical Zoo, the Botanical Gardens), and the parks and promenades are lovely. For food, look to the village of Ein Karem, the hotels and a number of West-Jerusalem restaurants. Public transport, however, stops.

Does public transport run on Shabbat in Jerusalem?

No. Buses and the light rail stop from roughly mid-afternoon Friday until after dark on Saturday. Get around on foot (the centre and Old City are walkable) or by taxi / the Gett app, which run throughout.

Can you eat out in Jerusalem on Shabbat?

Yes, though many secular West-Jerusalem restaurants close. Reliable options are in Ein Karem and in the hotels, plus a handful of restaurants that open specifically on Saturday. We keep a live weekly list.

Go to the Western Wall for Kabbalat Shabbat — the welcoming of the Sabbath. As the sun sets, the plaza fills with singing and dancing across every community. It's free, open to all (modest dress), and one of the most moving hours you can spend in the city.

Is Jerusalem worth visiting over Shabbat?

Absolutely — if you plan for it. Treat Saturday as a slow, walking-based day in the Old City and the parks, experience Friday-night at the Wall, and you'll see a side of Jerusalem no other city offers. Just book restaurants ahead and don't rely on buses.
