Deir es-Sultan — The Ethiopian Monastery on the Roof of the Holy Sepulchre

Free entryOpen on Shabbat

One of the Old City's hidden corners: an Ethiopian monastery sitting on the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre itself, with monks' cells, Coptic and Ethiopian chapels and an otherworldly atmosphere. The entrance is through the courtyard by the Ninth Station of the Via Dolorosa, and the passage through it leads down into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Free.
